Located on both sides of the Tigris River, 130 kilometres north of Baghdad, the ancient capital of Samarra shows the reach of the Abbasid Caliphate, which was the major Islamic empire of the 8th century; it extended from Tunisia to Central Asia. The Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil built Samarra Mosque as a symbol of the region's faith and power. For many centuries, it was the largest mosque in the world. The design for the Malwiya Tower, as the minaret is called, from the Arabic word for "snail shell", demonstrates some influence from the square ziggurats of Mesopotamia with the exterior stairs and ramp winding around several times on their way up to the top. Constructed of sandstone between 848 and 852 CE, its ascending spiral conical design is not only impressive, but also unique. Today Samarra remains the only surviving Islamic capital that retains its original plan, architecture and arts such as mosaics and carvings. Great Mosque of Samarra was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
